Heal Our Land

2 Chronicles 7 : 12 – 14, Then the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: "I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. –NKJV
If there’s one thing t
hat all humans have in common it’s that we all make mistakes. At times, it seems the best we can do in our attempt to do well is to fall short. Since we’re all human and have faults, isn’t it reassuring to know that God is there to help us overcome our weaknesses?
As you read the scripture above, you may have noticed that God mentioned shutting up heaven, which could cause droughts on earth. He also talked about sending locusts to devour the land and pestilences among His people. Why would a loving and holy God do such things to those who are His own? As you read on in the text, you will discover that it’s for bringing correction to us when we choose to forsake God’s ways and His Word, and pursue sin. The writer of Hebrews tells us in chapter 12, “For whom the Lord loves, He chastens…”
The purpose of God bringing correction on His children isn’t to destroy us, but to save us from the wages of sin, which is death (Romans 6:23). Too many times people choose to focus only on the parts of the Bible where God brings correction to His people instead of how deeply God’s love is for them.
If anything, the verses from 2 Chronicles should give us comfort and hope since we are all inclined to mess up and fall short of God’s glory. In times of failure, the Lord wants us to know that there is a special place that we can go where He will meet with us and hear our prayers. It’s called the “House of the Lord."
Since the pleasures of sin come with a hefty price tag, we need to know that our God has made provision for us, so that we can be delivered from the wages of our sin. As we humble ourselves before the Lord in prayer and turn from our wicked ways, God has promised to forgive us of our transgressions.
What I’ve written about thus far has been mostly about us as individuals, but today’s scripture also addresses national sins. As a nation, we have forsaken much of our Judeo-Christian roots. Our forefathers saw the importance of founding a new nation on the principles of God’s Holy Scripture. This is why you will see references of God and His Word inscribed on tablets and monuments throughout our nation’s capital, as well as our currency.
As we have deviated from the truths of God, we have seen the toll our sin has taken on it. America needs the healing touch of God once again. We need God to heal the division in our land. May “we the people” humble ourselves and repent, so that God can heal our land. Will you join with me in praying for this great country?
